Visually inspect all hydraulic lines, fittings, and connections leading to and from the control valve for any signs of external leaks, which can draw air into the system. This preparatory step is non-negotiable, as attempting to bleed air from a system with active leaks or insufficient fluid is ineffective and can introduce more air.

Systematic Air Bleeding Procedure for the Control Valve
With the system prepared, the core bleeding process can begin. Most excavator control valves are equipped with dedicated bleed screws or ports, typically located at the highest points on the valve body or on the associated actuator lines. Consult your machine's service manual for the exact location. Connect a clear vinyl tube to the bleed port and run the other end into a clean container partially filled with hydraulic fluid to prevent air from being sucked back in. Have an assistant start the engine and run it at a low idle speed. Slowly open the bleed screw approximately one-quarter to one-half turn; you will initially see a frothy mixture of fluid and air escaping through the tube. Allow the fluid to flow until the stream becomes completely solid and free of bubbles, then immediately tighten the bleed screw securely while the engine is still running and fluid is flowing. This "bleeding under flow" method is more effective than a static bleed. Repeat this process for all designated bleed points on the control valve assembly.

Post-Bleeding Verification and Operational Check
After bleeding all points, it is crucial to verify that air has been successfully purged. Increase the engine speed to a medium idle and slowly operate each hydraulic function controlled by the valve—such as the boom, arm, and bucket cylinders—through their full range of motion several times. This action circulates fluid through the entire circuit, helping to push any remaining pockets of trapped air back toward the tank. During this operational check, listen for any irregular noises like whining, chattering, or knocking from the hydraulic pump or cylinders, which are classic indicators of remaining air. Observe the movement of the cylinders; they should extend and retract smoothly without jerking or stuttering. Finally, re-check the hydraulic fluid level in the tank and top it up once more, as the bleeding process will have lowered the level. The system should now operate with restored responsiveness and stability.
