Excavator Control Valve Make-Up Pressure Adjustment: The Field Method That Stops Cavitation
Make-up pressure is the quiet killer of excavator control valves. You never see it on the gauge, you never think about it during routine checks, and yet it is the single most common cause of cylinder scoring, spool erosion, and premature valve failure. When make-up pressure is wrong, the cylinder rod side starves for oil during extension, air gets sucked into the line, and cavitation eats the chrome off the rod in months instead of years.
Most service manuals mention make-up pressure in a single paragraph and move on. That is not enough. This guide covers the actual adjustment sequence, the numbers that matter, and the mistakes that turn a simple five-minute job into a valve rebuild.
What Make-Up Pressure Actually Does Inside the Valve
When a cylinder extends, oil fills the cap end. But the rod end is losing volume — the rod takes up space inside the cylinder, so less oil fits on that side. If nothing feeds oil to the rod end, a vacuum forms. That vacuum pulls air past the seals, and those air bubbles collapse violently when they hit high-pressure zones. That is cavitation, and it destroys seals, scores rods, and pits spool bores.
Make-up pressure solves this. A small passage inside the control valve connects the pressure line to the rod-end port during extension. The pressure in that passage pushes oil into the rod end and keeps it full. No vacuum, no air, no cavitation.
The make-up pressure must be high enough to overcome the vacuum but low enough to not fight the cylinder. Typical make-up pressure sits between 1.5 and 3.0 MPa, depending on cylinder size and stroke speed. Too low and the rod end starves. Too high and the cylinder extends slowly because the make-up oil pushes back against the piston.
Why Make-Up Pressure Drifts and How to Catch It Early
Three things kill make-up pressure over time.
The make-up orifice clogs. This is a tiny hole, usually 0.8 to 1.2 mm in diameter, drilled through the valve body. Contamination builds up on the edges and restricts flow. On machines over 6,000 hours, the orifice can be 50 percent blocked without anyone noticing. The cylinder does not cavitate right away — it cavitates slowly, scoring the rod over weeks.
The make-up check valve wears. A small ball or poppet sits inside the make-up passage to prevent backflow. When this seat wears, oil leaks backward during retraction, and make-up pressure drops during extension. The result is intermittent cavitation that comes and goes depending on temperature and load.
The adjustment screw backs out. Vibration loosens the make-up pressure adjustment screw over time. On high-hour machines, the screw can back out a full turn or more, dropping make-up pressure to near zero. The cylinder cavitates from day one of the job, and the operator blames the oil instead of the valve.
Preparing the Machine Before You Touch Anything
Oil Temperature Is Not Optional
Make-up pressure behaves differently at 40 degrees versus 55 degrees. Cold oil is thicker, so it flows through the make-up orifice slower. The effective make-up pressure reads higher than it actually is at operating temperature. You will set it low, then watch it climb as the oil warms up.
Run the engine at high idle for at least 15 minutes. Hydraulic oil must reach 50 to 55 degrees Celsius. This is the temperature where your adjustment is valid. Every number in this guide assumes warm oil.
Isolate the Cylinder Circuit
With the engine running at high idle, move all levers to neutral. Lock them if possible. Cycle each lever five times to bleed trapped pressure. Disconnect the battery near solenoid connectors. Any stray pilot pressure will shift the main spool partially open, which changes the flow dynamics through the make-up passage and gives you a false reading.
Finding the Make-Up Pressure Adjustment Point
Where the Adjustment Screw Lives
On most excavator main control valves, the make-up pressure adjustment is a small screw on the side of the valve block, near the rod-end port of each cylinder section. It controls a spring-loaded poppet that meters how much pressure feeds into the make-up passage.
Turn the screw clockwise to increase make-up pressure. Counterclockwise to decrease it. One full turn typically changes the pressure by 0.3 to 0.5 MPa. Always work in 1/8 turn increments.
Some machines hide the adjustment under a plug. Remove the plug with a hex key, install a pressure gauge rated for at least 10 MPa on the rod-end port, and you are ready to work. The gauge does not need to be high-range — make-up pressure never exceeds 3.5 MPa.
The Two-Gauge Setup
You need two gauges to tune make-up pressure properly. One on the cap end of the cylinder, one on the rod end. The difference between them tells you what the make-up circuit is actually doing.
Install the cap-end gauge on the cylinder line at the valve port. Install the rod-end gauge on the rod-end port of the same valve section. Both gauges must be rated for at least 40 MPa to handle working pressure, but you are watching the rod-end gauge for make-up pressure, which stays under 3.5 MPa.
