Rinse the outer surface of the whole valve block with a low-pressure non-corrosive cleaning agent to wash away all accumulated dirt, dust and old oil sludge, then wipe it dry with soft lint-free cloths. Move the cleaned assembly to a flat, vibration-free workbench that has been cleared of all unrelated tools and metal debris.

Before loosening any tie rods that hold the stacked valve plates together, use a fine, non-toxic marker to draw a continuous alignment line across the outer edge of every adjacent plate pair. This line will help you put every plate back in its exact original position later, so no pre-set flow or pressure calibration gets disrupted. Take clear photos of the full stack from multiple angles, and label every disconnected hose and oil port with small waterproof tags to avoid mix-ups during reassembly. Never stack the removed valve plates out of order, and set each one down on a clean soft rubber mat to prevent scratches or dents on their precision mating surfaces.

Old Seal Removal and Mating Surface Cleaning

Once you loosen the tie rods and separate each valve plate one by one, gently pry out every old o-ring, backup ring and quad seal from their respective grooves. Do not use sharp screwdrivers or pointed metal tools that can scratch the smooth inner wall of the seal groove or leave tiny gouges on the plate mating face. If old seals are stuck firmly in their grooves due to long-term high temperature compression, use a soft plastic pick to lift them out slowly, and make sure no small fragments of the old seal are left behind in the narrow gaps.

After all old seals are removed, use a small soft brass brush dipped in clean hydraulic-compatible cleaning fluid to scrub every seal groove thoroughly. Wipe the inner wall of each groove and the entire flat mating face of every valve plate repeatedly with a new lint-free cloth soaked in clean flushing fluid, until no trace of old seal residue, fine metal particles or dust can be seen on any surface. Run a clean bare finger along every mating face and groove edge to feel for any tiny burrs or raised spots, and use a fine flat scraper to gently remove any uneven edges that could cut new seals during installation. Blow through all small oil passages on each plate with low-pressure dry compressed air, to make sure no hidden debris is trapped inside the internal flow paths.

New Seal Installation and Plate Stack Reassembly

Before taking any new seals out of their clean packaging, dip each seal in a small container of clean, filtered hydraulic fluid that matches the system’s working fluid, to lubricate them slightly before fitting. Do not stretch or twist any seal excessively during handling, as this can create permanent deformation that causes leaks later. Fit each seal into its designated groove one by one, make sure the seal sits fully and evenly at the bottom of the groove with no twisted sections or protruding edges. For paired sets of o-rings and backup rings, install the backup ring first on the correct side of the o-ring, following the original orientation that matches the system’s pressure direction.

Once all new seals are seated properly in their grooves, double check every seal position to confirm no part is pinched, flipped or misaligned. Align the pre-marked lines on each valve plate, then stack the plates back together one by one in their exact original order, making sure no seal gets pushed out of its groove when two plates come into contact. Thread the long tie rods back through the full stack of plates, then tighten the nuts on each end in a slow, crisscross sequence. Tighten each nut a little at a time in stages, so the clamping force spreads evenly across the entire mating face of every plate, preventing uneven pressure that could warp the thin valve plates or create gaps that cause cross-port leakage.

After the reassembly is finished, slide the control spools back into their respective bores slowly, and move each spool back and forth the full travel distance multiple times to confirm no new seal creates extra friction or stuck movement. Mount the valve assembly back onto the excavator, reconnect all hoses and oil lines following the earlier tags, then refill the hydraulic system with fully filtered clean fluid. Bleed all trapped air out of the valve body and oil circuits, start the engine at low idle speed, and actuate every working function slowly for more than 12 full cycles to let the system warm up and the new seals seat properly. Inspect every plate mating face and oil port for any signs of seepage, and run the machine under light working load for 30 minutes to confirm no unexpected leaks or operational lag appears.
